Spring 5783: Kings and Prophets: Writings from the South

Instructor:  Mark Long

Description: The majority of the books of prophecy in the Tanakh were written in Judah, starting in the late First Temple Period (from about 750 BCE) and continuing to the building of the second temple (a little after 520 BCE).  The goal of this course is to increase familiarity with some of these books and to clarify their historical context.  We will concentrate on the great prophetic collections attributed to Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel (referred to as the "major" prophets, based on the length of those works), but we will also give attention to a few so-called "minor" prophets, such as Micah and Habakkuk, whose recorded utterances are much shorter.  All readings will be from the Tanakh, and it is strongly recommended that participants have access to an English or Hebrew-English version.  Knowledge of Hebrew, while useful, is not required.
