Spring 5784 - Beit Midrash

Teacher: Harvey Raben

Class Description: Every week we will deal with a selected section of Talmud from the section Nezikin, focusing on civil legal matters. These practical texts give the contemporary reader a window into the business ethics of our ancestors. We will focus on Bava Metzia, the middle gate. On a certain level, Massekhet Bava Metzia illustrates one of the most unique facets of the Torah in general – the idea that civil law and business interactions are not subject merely to free agreements between people or even to community legislation that reflects the interests of society. Rather, the Torah holds that human relationships must be held to the same standards as human relationships with the Divine. Come join in the discussion as we explore the rabbinic mind in defining the limits and rules for living together in a moral world.
