Description:  The Tanakh provides more detailed biographical information concerning King David than it does for any other Biblical figure, including Moses and the Patriarchs.  Nonetheless, the legend of David has largely eclipsed the human being. Contemporary scholar Baruch Halpern has attempted a detailed, often adversarial re-examination of David’s personality in his study “David’s Secret Demons.”  We will study selected portions of this work in conjunction with relevant passages from I-II Samuel, I Kings, and the Book of Psalms.  In some cases, we will examine a few verses in the original Hebrew, but translations will always be provided and no previous knowledge of the language is required.
